  • Project Summary

    This project provides science and research support for planning of new and developing salmon aquaculture operations in Tasmania.

    This year a focus is on the development of spatial decision-support tools for salmon aquaculture. We are continuing and expanding research initiated in a pilot study in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in 2019 by including other areas in Tasmania. Core priorities to support this research are to:

    1. Uncover and collate diverse marine spatial data available for Tasmanian waters to inform our modelling (see our report ‘Review and compilation of spatial data in Tasmanian marine waters: A pilot study’ [September 2020])
    2. support project FRDC 2019-111 Tasmania’s Marine Atlas.

    Core research priorities also include:

    1. Developing methods and conducting marine zone assessments for salmon aquaculture development, particularly with seafloor mapping using multibeam echosounder technology.
    2. Conduct ecological modelling to evaluate the spread of dissolved (ammonium) and solid (feed and faeces) waste from salmon farms in different growing regions. Understanding the interactions of these inputs with reef ecosystems is a major focus.
